Coinciding with the variety of fall arts events throughout Wyoming, including the Jackson Hole Fall Arts Festival,Altamira Fine Art will host a whopping five exhibitions during the month of September.
Robert Moore, The Thick of it, oil, 36 x 36 in.Rocky Hawkins: The Mystics and What They Know and Stephanie Revennaugh: Attuning run from September 1 to 15 with an opening reception on September 4, from 5 to 7 p.m.; Michael Blessing: West of Somewhere hangs September 8 to 22 with a reception on September 11 from 5 to 8 p.m.; following that is Robert Moore: A Place of Peace from September 15 to 29, with a reception on September 16, 5 to 7 p.m.; and finally, Jackson Hole Fall Arts Festival featured artist Ben Steele rounds things out with an artist reception event on Saturday, September 19, from noon to 2 p.m.
Michael Blessing, The Good Shepherd, oil, 48 x 30 in. “The Good Shepherd was inspired by my appreciation for stories about ordinary people who choose responsibility over comfort. They don’t set out to be heroes. They just do what’s right as best they understand it,” Blessing says of one of the new paintings in his upcoming show. The oil depicts a cowboy with an electric-blue rifle in Blessing’s distinct style of bold, flat color and neon accents.

“Doing what’s right, to the best of your ability, was an unwritten rule I grew up with. I was taught to return what you borrow in better condition than when you received it. Tell the truth. Help your neighbor. Leave the land better because you were there. I’ve fallen short plenty of times, but those values have stayed with me,” he continues. “I choose to paint people with grit. They’re flawed, but they keep going. They face what comes and take ownership of it. They learn that the relationships they build help carry them forward. For me, this painting tells the story of a young man who lost his father (and mother) at an early age, lived through difficult times, and still chose to act with integrity. He accepted responsibility, cared for the people around him and did his best to make the world a better place. In many ways, he’s like all of us. We all face challenges we didn’t ask for. What matters is how we respond. I hope that comes through in this painting.”

Michael Blessing, A Just Compensation, oil, 30 x 24 in.
Moore brings his heavily textured landscapes and nature scenes to his solo show, including The Thick of It, rendered in gentle, muted tones. “My challenge was to create the sense of a dense forest with thick undergrowth and a dense canopy breaking the sky into a thousand pieces of filtered light,” he says. “The broken pieces of harmonious color also had to communicate the foreground, middle ground, background and sky. The unaltered and sometimes mechanical marks are left as an invitation to consider how our brain deciphers the manifold variations of hues and values into form and space.”
