Artist Focus: Rainny Zhao

Rainny Zhao is an award-winning oil painter based in Washington. She is a signature member of the Oil Painters of America, the American Impressionist Society and the Portrait Society of America. Her work has earned numerous national awards, including the Oil Painters of America Western Regional Gold Medal sponsored by Western Art Collector,and has been exhibited in premier national juried exhibitions across the United States. Working in a contemporary representational style, Zhao is known for paintings that explore the emotional connection between people, animals and the natural world through the expressive use of light, atmosphere and quiet moments of contemplation.

“People are at the heart of my work, but I am equally drawn to the quiet presence of animals, the stillness of nature and those moments that feel suspended between memory and dreams. Whether I am painting a portrait, a solitary figure beneath moonlight or an animal whose gaze seems almost human, I am searching for something beyond appearance—a feeling that cannot be explained in words,” the artist says. “Every painting begins with light. Light shapes the mood, reveals what is important, and, just as importantly, leaves something hidden. I work in traditional representational oil techniques because they allow me to slow down, observe carefully and discover subtle emotional shifts through color, atmosphere and form.”

Zhao continues, “I am inspired by ordinary people and by the quiet strength that often goes unnoticed. Rather than telling a complete story, I hope to create a moment that invites contemplation and allows viewers to bring their own memories and experiences into the work.
