Now open in Missoula, Montana, is Origin Gallery, a new art destination dedicated to Western art, Native American materials and historical art. Founded by Matthew and William Davis of Davis Brothers Auction, and Montana arts advocate Brian Sippy, the owners are united under one vision: “To present rare and important works that tell the story of the American West through art, history and craftsmanship,” the gallery notes.

Origin opened in July and has already connected with new and veteran collectors. “Origin Gallery lives downtown in the Old Townsite of Missoula, Montana. Origin Gallery showcases artworks and artifacts that were pivotal in shaping the Mountain West we know today,” says Sippy. “Ranging from plein air oil paintings of a winter landscape to pottery pieces that changed an entire economy for Pueblo Natives, the curation team strives to keep the stories of the Old West alive. Indeed, our offerings have an origin story. History starts here.”

Works being offered during the inaugural events include pieces by Charles M. Russell, Frederic Remington, Olaf C. Seltzer, Joseph Henry Sharp, Deborah Butterfield and many others. Native American material includes a historic Plains beaded and fringed hide war shirt, a polychrome pictorial jar by Hopi-Tewa potter Nampeyo, Apache pictorial baskets and Two Grey Hills Navajo textiles. A September exhibition will feature a collection of Edward S. Curtis orotones, including several of his most popular and acclaimed images.
