A Fall Trio

Three shows mark the fall lineup in September at Gallery Wild in Jackson Hole.

All eyes are on Jackson Hole, Wyoming, this fall as collectors from around the world descend on one of the great art destinations in the American West. One must-visit venue is Gallery Wild, which will be hosting three major shows, in addition to having a number of artists in the gallery greeting fall visitors.

Christy Stallop, Stillwater, oil on panel, 24 x 24 in.

The first show up in the September lineup is Christy Stallop: Common Thread, featuring new work from the Texas-based painter who frequently paints objects, including bandanas, the iconic piece of cloth that has a long history all around the West. In addition to her bandana paintings, such as Wild Bloom, she will also be offering two round paintings of crows, each in bold colors.

“Christy Stallop’s oil paintings are vignettes of the West, depicted through a few of its unwitting icons, including grackles, bandanas and local landmarks. Best known for her lovable grackles painted in oil, Stallop imbues her emotionally intelligent sense of humor into her work. ‘Sometimes you need something that makes you smile,’ she has said,” the gallery notes about the artist. “A lifelong creative, Stallop refined her painting technique over years of teaching art, as is evident in the formal qualities of her work. Her ability to render her whimsical subjects so beautifully grounds her paintings, allowing viewers to connect with her work in an unexpected way.”

Amber Blazina, Think Fast, oil on linen, 48 x 60 in.

Stallop’s show will open on September 11, which will coincide with the 5 p.m. Palates & Palettes event that brings together culinary and art experiences in venues all around the Jackson Hole Town Square, including at Gallery Wild.

Next up, opening on September 16, is Amber Blazina: Passage, a new show featuring 15 works of art from the rising wildlife painter. New paintings will include single subjects like bear and elk, along with works with multiple subjects, such as Winter Solstice, which shows several dozen bison walking through a snowy field.

Carrie Wild, Rendezvous Twenty Four.4, acrylic and gold leaf, 48 x 48 in.

“Influenced by impressionism and abstract expressionism, Amber’s work occupies a space between representation and raw emotion,” the gallery writes of her work. “Her brush flies from palette to linen with a sense of urgency; the act of painting is physical, even cathartic. The finished portraits carry a powerfully feminine presence, strong yet vulnerable, grounded yet spiritual. Animals meet the viewer’s gaze not as trophies or icons, but as sentient beings with weight and spirit.”

Blazina’s show will coincide with a gallery walk that is part of the annual Jackson Hole Fall Arts Festival, which also includes the September 19 quickdraw and auction. A number of Gallery Wild artists participate in the immensely popular quickdraw that takes place in the Town Square.

Amber Blazina, Apparition, oil on linen, 72 x 40 in.

Christy Stallop, Blaze, oil on panel, 24 x 24 in.

Finally, on September 18, the gallery will present Carrie Wild: The Gold, featuring as many as a dozen new works. Wild’s paintings, some of the most modern Western work offered in Jackson Hole, will include animals subjects, many of them with gold leaf, a component to some of her most exciting new work.

Christy Stallop, Wild Bloom, oil on panel, 40 x 30 in.

One of her new pieces is Rendezvous Twenty Four.4. It shows 24 bison drawn in black on a solid background. The drawings are simple outlines of the massive beasts, with gold-leaf embellishment on a cow and calf pair. Loose marks and light washes of black swipe through the painting at various places, including in the lower-left corner, where a pair of bison are presumably missing within the grid of animals. Although distinctly a work by Wild, the painting calls out to Le Taureau, Pablo Picasso’s image of a bull that gets progressively less detailed across 11 drawings until the final image is made with five simple lines. The work asks viewers to decide where realism ends and abstraction begins. Wild’s paintings, which often offer similar thematic interpretations, are studies in iconography of the American West.

Amber Blazina, Winter Solstice, oil, 36 x 24 in.

In addition to these three shows, Gallery Wild will have other programming throughout September and the exciting fall season in Jackson Hole. —
