Small Wonders

Maxwell Alexander Gallery’s online small works show opens this July.

Maxwell Alexander Gallery’s upcoming Summer Small Works Showis all about accessibility. Not only is the exhibition entirely online—giving collectors the ability to browse and purchase works at their leisure and in the comfort of their own homes—it also features smaller-scale artwork at typically more affordable price points. Like most miniature sales, it’s a chance for both seasoned collectors and those looking to dip their toes into art-collecting waters.

Dan Stovall, In Command, oil on linen, 9 x 12 in.

The summer 2026 show will feature some massive names in Western art, including G. Russell Case, Howard Post, Kim Wiggins, T. Allen Lawson, James Morgan, Dan Stovall and many others. In total, about 75 new works by more than 50 artists will be on display.

Howard Post, The Inspection, oil, 11 x 14 in.

Phyllis Shafer’s oil on linen Pink Sky Morning is rendered in the artist’s dreamlike hand, with undulating desert flora and geology swirling into a pale pink desert sky. While the painting was started directly in the Alabama Hills, east of the Sierra Nevadas near Lone Pine, California, Shafer usually finishes her work back in the studio. “Working outdoors is how I arrive at the narrative and composition—essentially, the crux of each painting. Living in Lake Tahoe, I spend a great deal of time outside—painting, camping, hiking, cross-country skiing or biking—and this daily communion with the natural world is what drives my work,” she explains. “Early in my career my paintings were more fantasy-based, and that approach still appeals to me. I continually seek a balance between direct observation and narrative fantasy, using exaggeration, torqued perspective, rhythmic stylization, heightened color, as well as a strong fidelity to observed reality to create a particular narrative of the natural world.”

Xiang Zhang, Going to Pasture, oil on linen, 20 x 16 in.

Another new work in the forthcoming show is Going to Pasture, an oil on linen by Xiang Zhang. “The two cowboys unloaded their horses from the trailer, saddled them and rode to the pasture to gather the cattle for today’s work,” says the artist. “This is a new type of composition for me, looking at the scene from the top. A bird’s-eye view. The cowboys are done in a very traditional style, but this is a more contemporary view. No background or foreground, just the contrasting shadows to add some depth.”

Phyllis Shafer, Pink Sky Morning, 2026, oil on linen, 18 x 20 in.

A variety of subject matter will be showcased across the 50 artists featured in the exhibition, including vibrant landscapes, North American wildlife, cowboys, ranching life and more.

The Summer Small Works Show will go on sale through Maxwell Alexander Gallery’s website beginning July 11 at 9 a.m. Pacific Time and is first-come, first-served. It remains on view through July 25. —

T. Allen Lawson, Curtain Call, oil on linen mounted on panel, 16 x 16 in.
