Brad Overton debuts new work at Altamira Fine Art
Utah-based painter Brad Overton has a new show at Altamira Fine Art in Jackson Hole, Wyoming, starting on July 23. Overton paints an eclectic variety of Western-inspired images that run from contemporary to audaciously modern. Some of his most recognizable works are images depicting small vintage toy figurines. For his new show, Overton created Thundering Moon, showing a Native American rider on horseback underneath an image of the Thunderbird Indigenous symbol. His works frequently feature themes such as the commodification of the West, archetypal and even stereotypical depictions of Western figures, and the use of iconography. His works also often have a sense of humor that lightly pokes fun at the seriousness of the West.

Diné painter Craig George offers fresh perspectives
In the June/July issue of Native American Art magazine, writer John O’Hern interviewed Diné painter Craig George, whose work features contemporary Native American subjects living in the West. His subjects call out the past, and yet they also are living in the modern-day world. It’s a unique perspective, especially when almost all of his work features his subjects on bicycles. George is also painting landscapes with ribbon-like colors that fill the sky. Western collectors will see a lot of crossover appeal with both his bike paintings and landscapes. George was influenced by graffiti culture, and yet has has already had a successful entry into fine art.

Tony Thielen makes a splash in Western art
Opening July 3 at the A.R. Mitchell Museum in Trinidad, Colorado, is an exhibit for painter Tony Thielen. If this name is not familiar to you, jump on board because Thielen’s work is exciting and modern. “Tony’s approach is refreshingly individualistic. A blend of representation, abstraction and self-expression, striving to find a balance between the three,” the museum notes. “He emphasizes the importance of not being afraid to fail, embracing learning opportunities and constantly pushing creative boundaries.” Thielen lives in Santa Fe, New Mexico, where he paints many subjects, including his recent cowgirl portraits.
