The beauty of a Western sale is its diversity of materials, subjects and genres. This will be on full display at a June 7 sale at Freeman’s in Philadelphia, where the auction house will offer a variety of material in a sale, appropriately titled, Western, Wildlife and Sporting Art, including Contemporary Native American.
Gerard Curtis Delano (1890-1972), Painting the Shield, oil on canvas, 22 x 40 in. Estimate: $30/50,000One of the standout lots of the sale is Eanger Irving Couse’s painting Harmony, showing a Native American figure playing a flute by a forest stream. These outdoor paintings are considered classics by Couse and are valued by collectors. The work is estimated at $60,000 to $100,000.
Another Native American subject can be seen in Gerard Curtis Delano’s Painting the Shield,showing a figure in an interior setting with dramatic light. Delano is primarily known for his desert paintings of Navajo riders, but this 40-inch painting should appeal to collectors of his work. It’s estimated at $30,000 to $50,000.

Native American riders do appear in Earl Biss’ 1999 painting She Sings Her Reflections in the Sun, which offers luscious paint in Biss’ unique and modern style. The Crow artist has done extremely well at auction in the last several years with no signs of slowing as major works continue to arrive at auction houses. The Biss painting is estimated at $15,000 to $25,000.
