Letter from the Publishers

Welcome to the June issue of Western Art Collector! This is the annual issue featuring our Collector’s Focus: Canyons & Deserts. While this is  a special section devoted these unique themes, canyons and deserts appear in every issue because they remain central to the visual identity of Western art. These landscapes embody the scale, silence, resilience and spirit of the American West.

The canyon, with its layered stone and dramatic light, speaks to time, permanence and awe. Artists have long been drawn to the shifting shadows and monumental forms found in places like the Grand Canyon and Canyon de Chelly, where nature feels both powerful and sacred. Deserts offer a different emotional language. Their openness and quiet allow artists to focus on atmosphere, color and light in deeply poetic ways. The vast horizons of Monument Valley and the Sonoran Desert continue to symbolize freedom, endurance and contemplation. For collectors, these works preserve not only the geography of the West, but also its enduring mythology and spirit. Canyons and deserts have been a mainstay in our pages since the very beginning. It’s a resilient subject in Western art.

As Western Art Collector turns 19 in a few months, I submit to nostalgia. As I look through our pages, I see galleries and museums that have been staples in the collecting world for decades. Just see our coverage of the Prix de West at the National Cowboy & Western Heritage Museum. This show is in its 54th year. Both Adolfo and Michael will be in attendance and if you see them, please come up and say howdy. In fact, you will find five Prix de West artists with their showcased advertisements within these pages, plus a preview of the show on Page 90. You can also hear the stories of many of these artists over the years on our podcast, the American Art Collective. The West signifies legacy, spirit and community. Like our canyons and deserts, Western Art Collector offers a vast opportunity for you in collecting and sharing legacies with shows and artists, and it just gains momentum with each issue. Enjoy!
