Artist Focus: James Andrews

James Andrews’ paintings are rooted in a lifelong reverence for the American West, sparked by a grandfather who was a true, working cowboy. This personal connection drives his pursuit of artistic excellence.

Buffalo Hunter, oil, 12 x 18 in.

“I seek to honor the spirit of the West through the technical language of the Old Masters. To achieve this, I have devoted hundreds of hours to studying the methods of painters like Johannes Vermeer, focusing on the nature of light, color theory and the principles of visual reality,” Andrews says. “I have a deep commitment to authenticity, so I spend many hours researching historical details and travelling to specific locations to photograph models and scenery, ensuring every composition is grounded in truth.”

The Charge of Crazy Crow, oil, 27 x 18 in.

Andrews continues, “My work is an effort to preserve a disappearing history. By applying classical painting techniques to Western subjects, I aim to give these stories the permanence and dignity they deserve. Preserving the soul of the Old West for future generations is one of the driving forces in my work.”

His hard work has already paid off, most recently with the People’s Choice Award in 2025 from the Phippen Museum in Prescott, Arizona. “I feel truly blessed that my heart-felt approach was noticed and it was an honor to receive the [award],” he says. “It is rewarding to see my work resonate with people.”

Writing on the Wall, oil, 12 x 24 in.

Andrews will next present his work at the Phippen’s Hold Your Horses Exhibition from July 24 to September 27. —
