This summer, Heritage Auctions will host its Western Art: Visions of the American Frontier auction, offering collectors the chance to bid on more than 100 works of both historic and contemporary Western art across a variety of mediums including oil, acrylic and color woodblock print.

Fritz Scholder (Luiseño, 1937-2005), Indian Sitting on Bed, 1974, acrylic and oil on canvas, 80 x 68 in. Estimate: $50/70,000

“This highly anticipated auction brings together a curated selection of property from historic and traditional Western art to cutting-edge contemporary Southwestern works,” says Alissa Ford, Heritage Auctions’ vice president of American & Western Art.

Gustave Baumann (1881-1971), Processional, color woodblock print on paper, ed. 33 of 120, 14 x 13½ in. Estimate: $10/15,000

Celebrated Luiseño artist Fritz Scholder’s acrylic and oil painting of a man taking a sip from a mug is estimated to fetch between $50,000 and $70,000. Night Passage, a 1985 painting by G. Harvey of two cowboys on horseback, has a presale estimate of $40,000 to $60,000. Other highlights include Gustave Baumann’s impressive woodblock print Processional (est. $10/15,000), featuring an intricately detailed white tree, as well as Nieto’s 2008 acrylic Plains Archer (est. $30/50,000), a bold and vibrant composition of a Native American man aiming his bow toward the sky.

John Nieto (1936-2018), Plains Archer, 2008, acrylic on canvas, 72 x 60 in. Estimate: $30/50,000

“In addition, collectors are encouraged to explore complementary offerings in the May 19 American Art Auction, which features an impressive selection of fine art, including standout examples of high-end Western and American works,” Ford adds. “Together, these sales demonstrate Heritage Auctions’ continued momentum in the fine art and collectibles markets, offering exceptional opportunities across categories and price points.”
