Distinct Voices

Acosta Strong Fine Art in Santa Fe presents its 10th annual Tres Pintores show.

Acosta Strong Fine Art in Santa Fe, New Mexico, will present its 10th Tres Pintores exhibition from June 1 through 19. Gallery owner Carlos Acosta says, “[The] exhibition brings together three distinctive voices of the contemporary Southwest—Jack Dunn, R.E. Reynolds and Jim Jennings—in a dynamic three-artist exhibition. This 10th annual show highlights new works that explore the color, light and structure of the Western landscape through each artist’s unique lens, from Dunn’s bold Fauvist style to Reynolds’ plein air compositions and Jennings’ expressive interpretations of the region. Together, Tres Pintoresoffers a compelling dialogue on the evolving spirit of Southwestern painting.”

Jack Dunn, Pedernal, oil on canvas, 24 x 30 in.

After graduating from the United States Military Academy at West Point, and while serving as a liaison officer with the Italian Army, Dunn discovered his interest in painting. The colors and geometric forms of the desert and the influence of Marsden Hartley, Wassily Kandinsky and Georgia O’Keeffe have been his inspiration for more than 20 years.

His painting Pedernalis his Fauvist interpretation of a classic landform in Northern New Mexico made famous by O’Keeffe herself. He enjoys painting in plein air, even back at his studio where he moves his easel out to his courtyard to continue painting. He can capture the fleeting effects of the landscape on site and have the luxury of making adjustments back in his studio.

R.E. Reynolds, Looking West, oil on canvas, 48 x 60 in.

Reynolds paints rapidly on site, capturing the light and energy of the landscape as he experiences it. He grew up painting and drawing with his father, Robert S. Reynolds. He now lives in Northern New Mexico among the landscapes he loves to paint. “I hope to convey a sense of my passion for the landscape, the feeling of sunshine, the wind and the energy that fills and connects the earth, the sky and me,” he says. “I find it beautiful, powerful and mysterious. In this way, painting becomes a way to try to understand the magic of the landscape.”

Jennings has lived in Santa Fe for nearly 30 years and is known for his surreal interpretation of the distinctive cloud formations of the region. In his painting Colina Chamisa Grande,he depicts the bright yellow display of flowering chamisa that enlivens the New Mexico landscape in late summer. “I enjoy the challenge of expressing this world with the limited tools of canvas and paint,” he says. “I try to paint directly and simply because I just like the look of a simple brush stroke of color. I find it to be the best way to emulate nature.”

Jim Jennings, Colina Chamisa Grande, oil on canvas, 48 x 48 in.

Tres Pintores offers the opportunity to experience three painterly interpretations of similar landscapes by three distinctive artists. —
