On June 21, Pure West Art Auction will present its eighth annual auction, Buffalo Bones. The sale, which celebrates Western art, includes a healthy mix of contemporary, modern and historical Western art pieces, many of them consigned from estates. Around 125 lots will be offered to bidders. Approximately 25 artists were also invited to create work specifically for the sale.

“[The sale] offers an exceptional afternoon involving fine art, live music, elevated cuisine and impactful advocacy,” says auction founder Ingrid Schulz. “We celebrate our love for the West and support Western art in our corner of Canada. This year we are joining forces with #NotInMyCity, an organization headed by country musician Paul Brandt, to combat human trafficking.”
Attendees can expect quite the experience with Pure West’s signature “Yellowstone meets garden party” atmosphere.

Amber Schmidt, Western Feel, deer hide, coyote fur, Pendleton and turquoise on bison skull, 26 x 26 in. Estimate: $1,700
Pieces to watch for include Kate Oltmann’s The Working West, depicting a rider on horseback, set against a colorful, quilt-like background. “Kate’s work is always popular for its modern sense, though rooted in traditional Western themes, shown in this piece of a working cowgirl,” Schulz explains. “She is known for these striking silhouettes, in front of textural backgrounds.”
Bidders will also find Amber Schmidt’s decorated skull, Western Feel.“Amber is invited to submit a skull each year, and each is a work of wonder,” Schulz shares. “In Western Feel, she has incorporated three-dimensional, printed horn caps which are beaded, [and includes] coyote fur, deer hide and genuine Pendleton fabric and turquoise. Her pieces are always authentic and each tells a beautiful story.”

Kate Oltmann, The Working West, oil and acrylic on canvas, 24 x 30 in. Estimate: $2,500
