Sporting Art for the Win
During Copley Fine Art Auction’s annual Winter Sale on February 20 and 21, there were several exceptional sporting scenes that performed well with bidders. So well, that it’s a good reminder to tune into artwork from the genre. Among the highlights from the sale were pieces by Ogden M. Pleissner, Edmund Henry Osthaus, Percival Rosseau, Arthur Fitzwilliam Tait, Lynn Bogue Hunt, Arthur Burdett Frost, Philip R. Goodwin and many others. These are some of the giants of the genre, with subjects that included hunting dogs, waterfowl, hunting scenes and fishing. Two of the standouts in the Copley sale, seen here, were Frank W. Benson’s Two Duck Hunters (est. $60/90,000) and Aiden Lassell Ripley’s The Pond Cover (est. $60/90,000). Both paintings are marvelous examples from each of the artists: the Benson is done in watercolor and shows the artist’s light touch with the medium, and the Ripley features thick and detailed vegetation from where his hunting subjects can hide during a brilliant autumn day. Two Duck Hunters hammered above estimates at $130,000 while the Ripley’s The Pond Cover hammered, also over estimates, at $160,000. Don’t sleep on sporting art.
