As a working illustrator of more than 15 years, Ryan Pancoast made a career fulfilling his client’s needs. But he also had his own creative needs.

Waking World, oil on canvas, 24 x 36 in.
“About a year ago I made the decision to finally devote my efforts toward painting what is most important to me: my home, the people around me and the natural world,” Pancoast says. “Being a parent, I use my paintings as meditations on the earth my children will inherit. While my paintings don’t depict explicit visions of the future, they show people interacting with nature as a means to embrace the new reality of our world and environment. And having worked so long as an illustrator in the fantasy genre, I can’t resist including a touch of imagination, even if it’s just heightening the inherent beauty in nature.”

Ceremonies Out of the Air, oil on canvas, 24 x 36 in.
Pancoast recently won the Western Art Collector Award of Excellence in Art Renewal Center’s 18th ARC Salon. The winning piece was Waking World, showing a young subject embarking on an outdoor adventure.

The Day to Shape the Days Upon, oil on canvas, 24 x 36 in.
“My images are largely inspired by the marine landscape around my home in Rhode Island and while I’ve lived in the Northeast my entire life, I have had many seminal experiences in the American West that have profoundly influenced my artistic vision,” he says. “I often think that I have a Western aesthetic and a New England soul.”
