A Worthy Collection

Copley celebrates its 20th anniversary with a stellar roster of artwork during the annual Winter Sale.

Taking place February 20 and 21, the 2026 edition of Copley Fine Art Auction’s Winter Sale will have close to 650 lots in subjects like Western, wildlife and sporting art, as well as folk art, bird decoys, decorative carvings, Americana, bronzes and fishing collectables from curated collections and estates.

Philip R. Goodwin (1881-1935), Bruin’s Dilemma, oil on canvas, 30 x 22 in. Estimate: $60/90,000

The star of the sale is the Robert S. Doochin Collection of Sporting, Wildlife and Western Art. The prior owner of American Paper & Twine, Doochin was a discerning collector who amassed a collection of original works by some of the most prominent artists in American art history, including Frederic Remington, Eanger Irving Couse, Carl Rungius, Philip R. Goodwin, Frank Hoffman, W.H.D. Koerner, Ogden M. Pleissner and many others.

Eanger Irving Couse (1866-1936), The Hunter’s Return, oil on canvas, 24 x 29 in. Estimate: $75/125,000

Couse’s oil The Hunter’s Return, depicting a young Native American man after a successful turkey hunt, is the chief highlight in the Doochin Collection. The piece is expected to fetch between $75,000 and $125,000. Collectors should also keep their sights on a gouache and ink wash by Remington titled Little Batiste, which has a presale estimate of $60,000 to $90,000.

In addition, Goodwin’s sporting scene Bruin’s Dilemma has a presale estimate of $60,000 to $90,000; and Koerner’s Quit Your Kidding, a campfire scene of a lively group of hunters telling stories, is estimated at $20,000 to $40,000.

Frederic Remington (1861-1909), Little Batiste, gouache and ink wash on paper, 21½ x 29 in. Estimate: $60/90,000

“We would have been delighted to sell the Doochin Collection alone, however, the rest of this year’s Winter Sale lineup is really jam-packed,” says Copley owner Stephen O’Brien Jr. “Two of Frank Benson’s very best watercolors, Duck Hunters (est. $60/90,000) and Flying Woodcock (est. $20/30,000); one of Rosseau’s most famous oils, Bill’s Covey (est. $60/90,000); a grand ruffed grouse oil by A. L. Ripley ($30/50,000); and one of the finest Lynn Bogue Hunt lineups bolster the all-star paintings. Also, just added to the lineup is In the Jungle - Tigers, a Friedrich Wilhelm Kuhnert (1865-1926) oil on board.” The Kuhnert is expected to go for $100,000 to $125,000.

W.H.D. Koerner (1878-1938), Quit Your Kidding, oil on canvas, 36 x 25 in. Estimate: $20/40,000

The two-day sale will have phone, absentee and internet bidding on three different online platforms, including the Copley Live app. The auction starts at 10 a.m. both days. —
