Robert Moore grew up on a farm on the Snake River in Idaho and now lives just a few miles away, close to nature. “Working in the fields,” he says, “I was part of creation and it was part of me.”
His father had suggested he study law, but after starting pre-law he realized it wasn’t for him. So he looked for something he could do that would still allow him to hunt and fish, have access to nature and earn a living. Art was the solution. He survived the lean years as a young artist as a single man. As his career advanced, he married his wife Rebecca and they now have six children. He is close to nature, he paints and, in 2012, he received the Idaho’s Governor’s Award for Excellence in the Arts.
Resonance, oil on canvas, 36 x 24 in.His painting Resplendence will be shown in the exhibition Step by Step at Altamira Fine Art in Scottsdale, Arizona, from February 10 to 21. The painting encapsulates his knowledge of the landscape and the techniques he uses to produce a convincing image for the viewer. The nuances of the simple order of foreground, middleground and background make up a coherent whole while maintaining their individuality, detail, light and color.

In Resplendence, the rendition of “atmosphere” gives the painting depth. Moore explains, “The mesas are darker against the light sky and are darker in the foreground and become lighter in the background through veils of atmosphere. Atmosphere starts at your nose. There are veils of particles in the air that are influenced by the light source. That, along with distance, causes different wavelengths to drop out. The more distance, the more veils and beautiful progressions are created.” The details and colors of the mesa in the foreground become muted as distance increases while the resplendent sky remains constant.

Jason Williams, owner of Altamira, comments, “What sets Robert apart is his ability to balance structure with spontaneity. His compositions are architecturally sound, yet his surfaces vibrate with energy, as if the landscape itself is expanding outward. Robert doesn’t just depict nature, he immerses the viewer in it, inviting us to feel the temperature of the air, the hum of the forest, the shifting brilliance of autumn or spring.” —
