New Skies

Maxwell Alexander Gallery has been at the forefront of breaking new talent in the West for many years, and that streak continues with Under the Same Sky, a new show featuring a trio of artists: George G. Redden, Nathanael Volckening and Dan Stovall. The show runs from February 7 to 21 in Pasadena, California.

With each of the three artists painting in a unique style—Stovall’s action-heavy cowboy scenes, Volckening’s quiet landscapes from the Southwest and Redden’s more introspective images of Native Americans—the show should pull in collectors of all types.

George G. Redden, Untouched, oil, 24 x 48 in.

“Showing at Maxwell Alexander Gallery is a meaningful milestone for me. I’ve admired the gallery’s commitment to artists who take risks and work with a strong sense of individuality, so being invited to present my work here feels very affirming and motivating. I’m also excited to be sharing this exhibition with my friends Dan Stovall and George Redden, both talented painters who are bringing fresh perspectives on their respective subject matter,” Volckening says. “While some of [my] works are inspired by the landscapes I grew up around, namely Northern New Mexico, they’re not tied to a particular region. Instead, they function as composites built from memory, observation and imagination. I think of them as spaces that exist somewhere between real locations and internal landscapes. Having friends and family in Southern California has, over the years, exposed me to the region’s varied landscapes, so I’ve also incorporated some of those influences into this body of work.”

Dan Stovall, Face to Face, oil, 40 x 30 in.

Stovall says that his pieces are inspired by modern-day cowboys wrapped in Old West illustration. “Most of the work I’ve been doing lately has had movement and overall shape of the composition as the foundation for my work, with background and landscape being secondary, but I have done a couple landscapes lately, and I’ve fallen in love with that process recently,” he says. “I haven’t put out hardly any for sale, but that may change soon. Look for a couple of ‘rare’ landscapes from me in this show.”

Nathanael Volckening, Heart Storm, oil on linen, 24 x 24 in.

Redden, who has shown at the gallery for several years, says his paintings will have a “serene contemplative tone to them.” He adds, “They are my efforts to capture some of the calmer moments I imagine a Native American would have in nature, just appreciating the sounds, sights and feelings of reverence the wilderness often inspires. A few of the paintings [include] a landscape feature I have rarely employed in my work to this degree—snow. It’s been an enjoyable process, learning to accurately portray the colors and values. I’ve enjoyed the journey of it and I’m excited by many of the results. Of course, I am endlessly inspired by the beauty of the human figure. Anatomy, gesture and the history of a person is visible in the figure—it’s a delight to paint.”

Each artist will present six new works at the February show. —
