In Focus

The Booth Western Art Museum highlights Indigenous photography.

The latest installment of the Booth Western Art Museum’s exhibition series dedicated to photography features a collection of incredible works by Native American photographers as well as Native American subjects.

Zoë Marieh Urness (Cherokee), Raven Tells His Story in the Fog, 2013, chromogenic print, 28 x 60 in. Booth Western Art Museum Photography Collection, Cartersville, Georgia, PH2018.004.001.

The West in Focus: Indigenous People features everything from photogravures to digital pigment prints to three-dimensional photographic assemblage. Among the artists represented in the show is Apache Skateboards founder Douglas Miles (White Mountain Apache, San Carlos Apache and Akimel O’odham), acclaimed for his street art and pop culture-inspired design, paintings, filmmaking and photography. “His 2024 photo assemblage, He’s Gone, addresses the issue of Indigenous land displacement by adhering a historical photo of an Apache man directly onto the surface of a vintage suitcase,” the Booth Museum notes.

Douglas Miles (White Mountain Apache/San Carlos Apache/Akimel O’odham), He’s Gone, 2024, vintage suitcase, spray paint and applique, 12½ x 18 x 6½ in. Booth Western Art Museum Photography Collection, Cartersville, Georgia, PH2025.005.003.

“It’s no mystery that the history of Native American people in this country has been overlooked, misrepresented and maligned,” Miles adds. “One thing that has never ceased is Native creativity and the making of art. In our creativity, we recreate ourselves, and in doing so, we create and shape the world around us.”

Another Indigenous artist in the exhibition is Zoë Marieh Urness, represented by her 2013 chromogenic print Raven Tells His Story in the Fog. Additional photographers include Ansel Adams, Patrick Nagatini, Kevin Garrett and more.

The West in Focus: Indigenous People will be on view February 21 through August 23, in conjunction with Photographer Cody S. Brothers: American Film. —
