High Country Adventure

Jackson Hole Art Auction’s February online sale will highlight works from many categories.

Coming off a record-breaking 2025 fall sale, the Jackson Hole Art Auction is returning to bidders with an online sale comprising more than 430 lots that will be offered in a timed and live auction format. The annual online sale also boasts a new name for 2026: Attainable Art for the Emerging Collector

Peter Hurd (1904-1984), Before Sunrise, watercolor on paper, 21 ¾ x 27 ¼ in. Estimate: $8/12,000

“This sale will have very attainable material as far as price point. It will make it very accessible for all kinds of collectors,” says auction director Kevin Doyle, who adds that the splitting of the sale across two formats was to cater to bidders, especially those who may not be able to, or even want to, sit through a nine-hour sale. “We’re trying to be very mindful of our clients’ time, which is why we’re presenting the auction this way.”

John Hauser (1859-1913), Another Shot, 1906, gouache on paper, 13½ x 9½ in. Estimate: $15/25,000

Bidding for the timed portion of the sale will open January 28. Registered bidders will be able to bid the works up at their convenience through February 11. Bidders who have used eBay will be familiar with this format. To prevent bid sniping, which are bids placed in the final seconds of a sale to “snipe” works from underbidders, each lot will gain additional time for each bid that comes in within five minutes of close. This extra time will allow bidders to make counter bids.

Frank Hoffman (1859-1913), Untitled (Fishing) oil on canvas board, 9 x 12 in. Estimate: $6/9,000

The live auction will take place on February 12. Doyle will serve as the auctioneer for roughly 150 works of art. Virtual bidding will be available on the auction house’s site and also through Invaluable. All of the work will available to preview prior to the sale in Jackson Hole, Wyoming.

Among the highlights of the sale are two exceptional examples of cowboy paintings by Bill Anton, Fresh Snow (est. $20/40,000) and Silver Creek Crossing (est. $15/25,000), and two strong paintings by British-born painter John Bye, Teton Dreams (est. $10/20,000) and Winter in the West (est. $8/12,000). Tucker Smith will have two high-country paintings: Clark Lake (est. $15/25,000) and Moose on the Hoback Rim (est. $9/12,000).

Clyde Aspevig, Rainbow Over Flat Creek, oil on canvas, 18 x 24 in. Estimate: $7/10,000

Olaf Wieghorst (1899-1988), Washout, oil on canvas, 28 x 38 in. Estimate: $10/20,000

One of the common threads amid the paintings is adventure in the West. That theme comes through strong in Olaf Wieghorst’s piece Washout (est. $10/20,000), John Hauser’s 1906 gouache Another Shot (est. $15/25,000) and also Frank Hoffman’s Untitled (Fishing) (est. $6/9,000). Other works exemplify the beauty of the West, such as Peter Hurd’s watercolor Before Sunrise (est. $8/12,000) and Clyde Aspevig’s Rainbow Over Flat Creek (est. $7/10,000).

Tucker Smith, Moose on the Hoback Rim, 1991, oil on canvas, 9 x 12 in. Estimate: $9/12,000

John Bye, Teton Dreams, oil on canvas, 30 x 40 in. Estimate: $10/20,000

The sale will also have works from contemporary Western artists, including from some of the rising stars of the Western art market. Two artists who have performed exceptionally well at auction include John Nieto and Malcolm Furlow. Both artists will be represented in the sale: Nieto’s 1993 painting Crow Warrior (est. $8/12,000) and Furlow’s 58-inch-tall Warrior on a Galloping Horse (est. $8/12,000). Both artists were active in the late 20th and early 21st centuries, and both used bold color and forms to transform Western iconography into boundary-pushing artwork.

Bill Anton, Fresh Snow, oil on board, 36 x 48 in. Estimate: $20/40,000

Doyle notes that the auction has seen an uptick in interest after the record-shattering $13.5 million sale in September 2025. “The response has been truly great,” he says. “I was just at a Jackson home this morning looking at some great material. The potential consigner was blown away by the results in September. We’ve seen and heard exciting things since the sale.” —
