Settlers West Gallery in Tucson, Arizona, hosts the 2025 edition of its Great American West exhibition

Just before Thanksgiving, Settlers West Gallery in Tucson, Arizona, will host the 2025 edition of its Great American West exhibition, a showcase of 100-plus works by more than 50 of the gallery’s top artists. This is Settlers West’s biggest show of the year, with an array of talented artists on the roster, including C. Michael Dudash, Jeremy Winborg, Ross Buckland, Jessica L. Bryant, Don Oelze, Scott Tallman Powers and more.

Ann Hanson, Beads and Bullets, oil, 12 x 16 in.Darcie Peet’s newest Southwestern landscape, Globe Mallow Dusk, captures the dramatic evening light casting dappled shadows across a desert mountainscape. In the foreground are saguaros, sagebrush and other desert flora. “In Tucson, we have striking sunsets in both directions…as the sinking sun in the west sets mountains and clouds aglow in the east. We have 360-degree sunsets, and this was one of those days,” Peet reflects. “At the end of my work day, I often cycle along the base of these mountains for quiet, fresh air, sunshine and to seek ideas for composition, color, value and sky character. I was not disappointed as a spring storm was dissipating, leaving a smattering of sunlit and shadowed clouds...Across a desert hillside below, the vivid orange spikes of one of spring’s longest blooming, desert wildflowers, globe mallow, echoed the final remnants of light on the tips of the Catalina Mountains and Pusch Ridge outside of Tucson.”

Rachel Brownlee, Desert Sons, charcoal and pastel, 15 x 30 in.

John Fawcett, The Cache at Mille Lacs, oil, 24 x 30 in.

Ann Hanson brings a powerful portrait to the upcoming show. “I was instantly drawn to the dignity of this young man, Jairus Rock Above, when I saw him at Crow Fair last month,” she says. “His mother, Angie GunShows, told me the Lakota Veteran breastplate that inspired the title of the painting was made by his father, John Cummins III. Jairus’ heritage also includes Cheyenne River Sioux and Crow. He is a descendant of Chief Grey Bull, and he wears the face paint of the chief. Jairus honors his heritage and traditions. I have always loved Native American regalia and strive to honor that and the people in my paintings.”

Darcie Peet, Globe Mallow Dusk, oil, 20 x 20 in.

Jonathan Noon, Still Sovereign, oil, 40 x 32 in.

Desert Sons, a charcoal and pastel by Rachel Brownlee, depicts a group of young horses in the heat and the sun, gathered together for mutual shade and bug swatting. “These are visibly young horses along with an older horse, the likely leader in the hierarchy of horse herds. They have a camaraderie and fellowship seen in herd-based animals,” says Brownlee. “I always work in charcoal, but this piece is warmed up with a gouache wash to really push the idea of the desert heat.”

Colt Idol, Showtime, oil, 36 x 24 in.

D. Edward Kucera, No Trail Left Behind, oil, 30 x 40 in.

The Great American Westshow opens on November 22 with a preview starting at 10 a.m., followed by an opening reception at 5:30 p.m., and finishing with a fixed-price draw at 7 p.m. Collectors do not need to be present at the reception to enter the purchase draw. The show hangs in the gallery through December 20. —
