Derek Harrison began drawing as soon as he was old enough to hold a pencil. Growing up he was always dabbling in art, even trying graffiti and tattoo art before moving to canvas.

Tranquil Moments, oil on linen, 24 x 18 in.
When he moved to California, Harrison studied, and is now an instructor, at the Los Angeles Academy of Figurative Art. He is also an adjunct faculty member at Westmont College in Santa Barbara, California, where he now resides. Over the years, he has increased his knowledge through workshops and classes with other well-known artists. Today his painting combines aspects of the Old Masters with more contemporary techniques.
Before reaching the age of 31, Harrison began winning awards for his paintings. In addition, he was awarded first place at the Artists of Inspiration/Artwalk at the Santa Barbara Museum of Natural History for two consecutive years. He placed second at the Bold Brush Competition and has since become a judge for that event. Harrison has also been a consistent finalist in the ARC Saloncompetition.
