An Afternoon of Art

The Mountain Oyster Club Contemporary Western Art Show and Sale presents hundreds of new works.

Founded in 1948 in Tucson, Arizona, the Mountain Oyster Club has a unique history steeped in Western traditions and Southwestern lifestyle. “There are many colorful stories of how the Mountain Oyster Club came to be…The most common versions say that it was begun by a group of cowboys, playboys, ranchers, polo players, race-horse types, and others whose unacceptable behavior had gotten them thrown out of all of the respectable establishments in Tucson,” the Mountain Oyster Club website notes. Whatever the story, the club playfully credits these six men as “the ones to blame” for its founding: Peter Gillham, John K. (Jack) Goodman, Nick C. Hall, J. R. (Rukin) Jelks, R.C. (Bob) Locke and Hubert Merryweather.

This year, the Mountain Oyster Club will be hosting its 56th Annual Mountain Oyster Club Contemporary Western Art Show and Sale. The 2025 event will feature more than 200 emerging and established artists exhibiting their best new works. Artists include such respected names as Lisa Danielle, Mejo Okon, Myron Sahlberg, Sean Wallis and many more.

The sale of all artwork in the show is determined by a drawing, which is always held the Sunday before Thanksgiving, as well as special member events leading up to the drawing.

The Mountain Oyster Club Contemporary Western Art Show and Sale will be held at the historic Pond Mansion, the club’s home, on Sunday, November 23, from 3 to 5:30 p.m. Guests can enjoy cocktails and hors d’oeuvres while viewing artwork by some of the finest traditional and contemporary Western artists working today. As this is a private show, space is limited and attendance is by invitation only. To request an invitation for tickets, contact the club’s art show director, Alisha Taylor, at (520) 792-0319 or email art@mountainoysterclub.com. —
