Memories of the Land

Tony Pro’s debut solo show in Santa Fe features 16 new works.

Tony Pro’s debut solo show in Santa Fe, New Mexico, will take place this fall at Meyer Gallery, offering collectors a closer look at the internationally acclaimed artist’s work. A deeply personal homage to the Navajo (Diné) and pueblo people, Between Earth & Sky features intimate portraits and panoramic landscapes in rich oils.

Silent Return, oil, 30 x 36 in.

“I grew up visiting the reservations with my parents every summer. My mother sold Native jewelry and textiles, and my father, an aspiring Western artist, would be in search of models and inspiration among the mesas of Arizona and New Mexico,” says Pro. “Those memories of Monument Valley, Canyon de Chelly and Taos shaped me. This show is my way of giving back.”

Among the Golden Ones, oil on linen, 36 x 24 in.

A total of 16 new works will be on display, with highlights including Among the Golden Ones, depicting a Red Willow woman from Taos nestled among glowing aspens; a powerful side profile of a Native American man in Higher Ground; and Tyler’s Song, a bold, graphic composition featuring a Diné flute player whose spirit is represented by a hummingbird.

“There’s a quiet strength in [these paintings] that reflects his story and the land he’s known since childhood,” says John Manzari, owner of Meyer Gallery.

Higher Ground, oil on linen, 20 x 16 in.

The exhibition runs from October 24 to November 6, with an artist’s reception on Saturday, November 1, from 4 to 6 p.m. in Santa Fe. —
