Symbols & Symmetries

For his new solo show at Blue Rain Gallery, Symbols and Symmetries, Brad Overton focuses on “small poetic theatre” in each of his paintings. In around 10 fresh works, Overton “strikes a particularly contemplative tone, all while retaining the wonder, humor and keen observation of the human condition that have become his trademarks,” says gallery director, Leah Garcia.

Garcia also notes that Overton not only brings poetic energy and sensibility to his subjects, but combines elements of history and individual stories with strong design and evocative symbols. Using oils, paper cutouts and images inspired by his collection of antique lead toys, Overton lets his sense of awe and delight dictate the thoughts that flow from his unique take on the world around him—complex and deep, yet straightforward and tinged with humor.

Reflected Moon, oil on canvas, 60 x 48 in.

“There’s a metaphor connected to each piece,” the artist says. “The toys, patterns and cutouts are stand-ins, real or imagined, for the concepts reflected in the narrative. I’m inspired by the Western myth and by the human experience of it. Past and present. How we reinvent and imagine our own lives through the dream of the past and the land. The themes of play, longing and freedom persist in these paintings. At least that’s what I see and feel about them. On a formal level, I’m after the simplest image and a kind of symmetry that offers balance.”

Trail Boss at the Rivers Edge, oil on canvas, 20 x 16 in.

For pieces like Reflected Moon, Overton explains that it’s about introspection, presence and the timeless quality life has when you’re living “reflectively.” Overton says, “The horse doesn’t see himself in the water, he sees the reflected moon, because he’s part of everything. He’s one. That’s the concept—oneness in solitude. It’s the artist’s life; it’s the life we all live. Solitude in nature, with nature and with the self is to be valued and felt.”
