Lucky Sevens

Sean Michael Chavez is named as the official artist for the 2025 Breeders’ Cup.

New Mexican painter Sean Michael Chavez, known for his popular paintings of horses and vaqueros, has been announced as the official artist for the 2025 Breeders’ Cup World Championships, which will run on October 31 and November 1 in Del Mar, California. The annual race is one of the most popular horse-racing events in the country.

Chavez created two images for the event, Lucky Sevens and The Torrie, and both will appear on official programs, posters and merchandise for the Breeders’ Cup.

Lucky Sevens depicts upon a podium the jockey and his horse standing tall and proud in the royal purple of the Breeders’ Cup. In the background, a rendering of the historic Del Mar race track, creating a sense of place,” Chavez says. “The Torrie is a fantasy painting. It imagines Giovanni da Bologna’s sculpture from 1580 and the Breeders’ Cup trophy come to life—elegant and ethereal.”

Millions of people watch the Breeders’ Cup, which is one of four horse-racing events that make up the Grand Slam of Thoroughbred Racing. The others are the Kentucky Derby, Preakness Stakes and Belmont Stakes. —
