Acosta Strong Fine Art in Santa Fe, New Mexico, will host a new solo show for painter R.E. Reynolds starting on October 20. The show, titled Sky’s the Limit, will feature new landscapes done in Reynolds’ unique impasto style that he achieves with a mixture of methods.
“I prefer to use tools that are a little too large for the job, in the sense that I do not want to be too careful, but rather discover in the process of laying paint down a feeling like sunlight on the figure, or the expansive windswept forms of cumulus clouds,” he says. “I’m using large palette knives, brushes, mason’s trowels and kitchen spatulas to add and subtract oil paint from the canvas.”

Layered, oil, 24 x 24 in.
The artist says the title refers to his desire to explore new modes of artistic expression. “I’ll be introducing paintings of the figure in water, fragmenting, merging together with nature as I explore my fascination with painting the clouds of summer during the short monsoon season often building into thunderheads,” he says. “I love being outside and feel I catch something vital to my artistic expression through direct contact with nature, in plein air. This is the way I paint most of the time.”

Momentum, oil, 48 x 36 in.
One of the new works is Layered, which was inspired by an evening thunderstorm layered across a vast open plain towards the Sangre de Cristo mountains near the artist’s home. “I live in Northern New Mexico near the town of La Madera, in a small valley with a stream surrounded by forested hills of juniper and piñon pine trees. My neighbors include wild horses, coyotes and jackrabbits.”

New Day, oil, 20 x 16 in.
In addition to Layered will be Momentum and New Day, both of which show clouds above the desert floor. Reynolds’ thick paint can be seen curling up off the canvas, which allows texture and unique three-dimensional qualities to permeate from the image. In addition to landscape works, Reynolds will also show several paintings of a nude figure swimming in outdoor settings.
The show will remain on view through October 31. —
