Concho belt stuns at Western Trading Post
Western Trading Post is enjoying its brand-new space in Wickenburg, Arizona, and right out of the gate it had a strong sale of a concho belt. The sale took place May 7 during the inaugural Advanced Collector’s Auction. The solid 14K-gold belt, made by Navajo jeweler Sunshine Reeves, sold to the winning bidder for $67,000. “We expected the belt to bring at least $40,000 to $45,000 based on the price of gold nowadays,” says Jim Olson, co-owner of Western Trading Post as well as auctioneer for the event. “But when it got to the $60,000 range, we became very excited and were pleased with the final result.”

William R. Leigh sells over estimates
Heritage Auctions’ May 16 American art sale in Dallas saw strong results for Ernie Barnes, J.C. Leyendecker and Norman Rockwell. But also sitting comfortably in the top 10 was Navajo Trader by William R. Leigh. The painting had a high estimate of $150,000, and yet bidding kept going until it closed at $237,000. The sale also saw four Ed Mell paintings come to market. All four sold over estimates. —Send us your Sold! stories by emailing Michael Clawson at mclawson@westernartcollector.com
