From Plate to Paper

Steamboat Art Museum’s latest exhibition highlights the art of printmaking.

From Leon Loughridge to the late Frank Stella, a new exhibition at Steamboat Art Museum in Colorado explores the art of printmaking, a unique creative process with a centuries-old history. Artist and master printer Sue Oehme serves as the guest curator for this upcoming exhibition, which offers visitors an immersive experience into the world of contemporary printmaking.

Leon Loughridge, Rio Grande Gorge Track, water-based woodblock print, 19 x 25 in.

“Much of my life has been devoted to the making and understanding of visual art. Most of my adult life has been dedicated to the art and technique of fine art printmaking, and now, as the guest curator, this exhibition will showcase the beautiful printmaking work that has been  produced, either with me, through me, or through teaching,” says Oehme. “Fine art printmaking is first and foremost, a very old-school, hands-on process, no matter what type of printing one utilizes.”

Frank Stella (1936-2024), Riallaro (b/w), four-color etching, aquatint, relief, collagraph on white TGL handmade paper, 46 x 32 in.

The Art of Printmaking: Process and Passion will showcase a variety of printmaking techniques, including etching, intaglio, woodblock printing and monotypes, defining it as both an art form and a technical discipline. Nearly 45 artists from across the country are featured in the exhibition, including Loughridge, Fred Tomaselli, Julia Fernandez Pol, Deborah Zlotsky, Patsy  Krebbs and Eva Bovenzi, as well as deceased artists like Stella, Louise Fishman and Sol LeWitt.

“Printmaking has such a rich history,” says Oehme. “It connects the past with the present, and I’m excited to help more people understand the process and the passion behind it.” —
