Held at the historic Dean House in Calgary, Alberta, the annual Pure West Art Auction,gearing up for its seventh edition, boasts between 150 and 200 significant Western lots. Ingrid Schulz, the founder and producer of the auction, notes that collectors will find “a quintessential mix of contemporary artists and historical pieces.”

Schulz continues, “Our group of contemporary artists are asked to create a piece of work specifically for this sale—one which hasn’t been seen prior to the sale. [In addition], Pure West always brings in few key pieces of art for the sale that hold historical significance and interest. We are [currently] working through a large estate collection, much of which will be in this auction as well.” This particular collection contains Navajo rugs, bronzes and additional historical art works.
While the sale is still garnering lots at the writing of this article, artists currently included are Leonard Reedy, Jody Skinner, Henri de Groot, Ed Borein, Jack King, Shannon Lawlor, Paul Van Ginkel, Neil Hamelin, Doug Leavitt, Ray Swirsky, Linda Stewart, CR Cheek, Doug Levitt, Renee Gould and Terry Lee.

“Interest in Western art is on a growth trajectory in Western Canada, spurred by new collectors and interest in the Western lifestyle,” Schulz notes. “The pendulum has swung to favor our Western heritage, and a new group of largely urban dwellers, as well as country folk, are interested in learning about Western art and growing their collections.”
The afternoon auction, held on June 22, hosts additional experiences like live Western music featuring country artist, George Canyon, as well as quick-draws, speakers and Western-inspired drinks and food. In addition to the live sale, collectors will have an online option this year through LiveAuctioneers for pre-bidding and livestream bidding the day of the auction. All of the art can be seen through that venue at the beginning of June. —
