Highlights from Up-and-Coming Artists and New Works Available in Studios and Galleries Around the Country

Blue Rain Gallery gets new work from Doug West

Now available at Blue Rain Gallery in Santa Fe, New Mexico, are several new pieces from Southwest modernist Doug West. One of the new works is Remembering the Flow & You, showing a union of plants, land and sky. “The Southwest is my rich pallet for creative inspiration. Time spent out on the land is where I feel most grounded. Watching the sky’s changing light, with heroic cloud forms overhead…these feed my artist’s eye,” West says. “I love that the land here is exposed and wide open to long distant horizons. New Mexico resonates deeply with my spirit as an artist. I am most interested in capturing what speaks of the expanse and the connection that ties us to this place in a timeless, memorable way.”

Carrie Wild unveils major new work in Scottsdale, Arizona

Carrie Wild, owner of Gallery Wild in Wyoming and New Mexico, is not only a rising star in the world of Western art galleries, she is also a talented painter. Her newest work, Lives in Daydream Two, was recently unveiled at Altamira Fine Art in Scottsdale, Arizona. The piece, now available, is a stunningly modern work that is rooted in the Western iconography of the horse. Few artists are riding as hard as she is in work this abstract, expressive and modern. And she’s owning it with large, complex works with fresh palettes and magical forms.

French painter makes strong debut at Medicine Man Gallery

Tucked into Mark Sublette’s Masters of Drawing show in February at Medicine Man Gallery was the work of French artist Mathieu Nozieres. The pieces, consisting of both drawings and paintings, confirmed the presence of a marvelous new artist that is worth following and collecting. Nozieres hits the fine art world with a strong background in comic books and illustration, which comes out in his exciting and story-based work. Since Masters of Drawing, Sublette has also shown his work at Scottsdale Ferrari Art Week and in his gallery in Tucson, Arizona. Responses to his paintings have been strong, with sales to prove it.

Brad Overton brings a fresh look to the Old West, in paint and bronze

Salt Lake City-based artist Brad Overton is now offering a new collection of work at Altamira Fine Art in Jackson Hole, Wyoming. The work, much of it inspired by Pop Art and other cultural touchstones related to Western art, is part of a show titled Big Guns, running from June 10 to 24. Works include his iconic toy cowboy and Indian figures, a Western pop gun and two new bronzes. One of the bronzes is Deathsperado, showing a pistol-wielding cowboy figure with an arrow stuck in his thigh. Overton’s clever work pushes the boundaries of Western art and parody, all while exploring what the iconic figures represent to modern-day audiences.
