On May 15, Freeman’s | Hindman will present Western and Contemporary Native American Art out of its Denver location. The sale will feature a variety of work from around the Western and Native American art markets.
Bill Anton, From Rocky Heights, oil on canvas Estimate: $20/40,000One top lot is Bill Anton’s 2008 oil From Rocky Heights, showing a trio of cowboys leading cattle through rough country with magnificent views. The piece, estimated at $20,000 to $40,000, features a strong diagonal composition exemplified by the cowboys who are leaning back in their saddles as their horses are pointed down into the image. The work was originally sold at the Coeur d’Alene Art Auction in 2008.

Anton’s piece features cowboys and cattle, and yet it’s also a strong example of his landscape work. Other landscapes in the sale include Edgar Payne’s Rugged Slopes, estimated at $15,000 to $25,000, and Louisa McElwain’s Palo Quemador, estimated at $5,000 to $8,000. Both artists were known for their loose brushwork.
Also in the sale is a Dave McGary bronze, Last Stand Hill (est. $10/15,000), showing three Native American riders and four horses, and Gustave Baumann’s From Hillside Gardens(est. $8/12,000), a 1941 color woodcut with aluminum leaf.

Finally, a John Moyers painting, Pomp and Circumstance, will also cross the auction block with estimates of $12,000 to $18,000.
Bidding starts at 10 a.m. in Denver. The sale will be held live with telephone, online and absentee bidding offered to collectors. —
