For painter Dale Terbush, it’s all about light, so much so, that the artist often refers to his desert landscape subject matter as skyscapes. “Obviously, landscapes are everywhere,” he says, “but I’m a regional painter. I live in Arizona, which is one of the most gorgeous states in the nation, and we have the most amazing skies, especially during monsoon season.”

For his upcoming solo show at Manitou Galleries in Santa Fe, New Mexico, Terbush will feature around 25 paintings—a mix of new and older work. For his newer work, collector’s may notice a similarity in style to that of renowned painter and illustrator, Maxfield Parrish (1870-1966). “My new work is inspired by Parrish—his luscious colors and compositions,” Terbush elaborates. “He inspired my work when I was in my 20s and continues to do so.”
Terbush also finds inspiration on a daily basis among his home near Echo Canyon, at the base of Camelback Mountain in Phoenix, Arizona. “The American Southwest not only inspired Parrish, but it’s about the gorgeous color palettes of the landscape,” says Terbush. “Think about Sedona [and the iconic red rocks], the Grand Canyon and the magnificent thunderstorms we get here in Arizona.”

In show work like In the Soft Shadows, we also see the influence of Thomas Moran (1837-1926), exemplifying the romantic, luminous nature found in the artists Hudson River School style of painting. “Cyndi Hall, the gallery manager, asked me to do something inspired by Moran,” says Terbush. “What happens in every case is, I start to go in that direction and then Dale Terbush kicks in. I like to tell people that I’m a little Hudson River School, a little Maxwell Parrish, and I put it all in a jar and shake it up.”
For his show at Manitou Galleries, spanning May 23 and 24, collectors can also expect to find the artist demonstrating his skills at the easel and engaging with anyone who wishes to know more about his work and process. Hall adds, “His creations, at once elegant and mysterious, pulsate with bold, exciting energy, imbued with a poetic spirituality that transcends the visual image.” —
