Martin Grelle work performs well in NYC
Texas artist Martin Grelle’s paintings are no strangers to New York City, where they have appeared in past sales from many of the big auction houses. In fact, Grelle’s NYC record is $350,000 from Christie’s T. Boone Pickens sale in 2020. His continued presence, and success, at New York auction houses was reinforced on January 23, when Grelle’s Apsáalooke Horse Hunters sold for $192,000, over the high estimate of $180,000. These large sales rarely have living artists in them, and yet Grelle’s works are continuously present, as are works by Howard Terpning.

A tale of two Remington Bronchos
Another highlight coming out of New York City is the sale of two similar casts of The Broncho Buster, Frederic Remington’s endlessly iconic bronze. On January 23, Christie’s sold its 1908 cast (No. 71, on right) for $504,000, leaping high over the $300,000 high estimate. Then, the very next day, Sotheby’s sold its 1900 cast (No. 38, on left) for $576,000, well over the high estimate of $350,000. It must be noted that both examples of the bronze have smooth chaps on the rider. An example with wooly chaps, favored by many collectors, was sold by Christie’s in 2007 for $2.6 million, which is a record for a Broncho Buster. That work, which was unnumbered, is thought to have been cast somewhere around the 33rd cast of the famous bronze. —
