When Mark Sublette moved his Maynard Dixon collection into its own museum around the corner from his Medicine Man Gallery in October 2024, he did it just in time to celebrate what would have been Dixon’s 150th birthday. On January 24, Sublette will honor the artist with a special event at the recently opened Maynard Dixon and Native American Art Museum in Tucson, Arizona.
Sublette, widely considered to be one of the foremost authorities on Dixon, has a large collection of material on the artists that makes up the bulk of his museum’s collection.
The Maynard Dixon and Native American Art Museum in Tucson, Arizona.Born on January 24, 1875, Dixon is often considered the grandfather of Western modernism and today his work has influenced countless painters and sculptors that came after him, including many that are still active today. Dixon was born in California and has a strong connection to the state, including his involvement in helping choose the famous color of the Golden Gate Bridge. But it was his adventures in the Southwest that are so celebrated today. Dixon would eventually move to Tucson, where he lived until his death in 1946.
