Artist Focus

Artist Focus: Sharon Standridge

Artist Sharon Standridge says her heart is in painting people.

Just Another Day on the Trail, oil on linen, 22 x 28 in.

“What I love to paint is the figure. In my early 20s, it was viewing the art of Winslow Homer that captured my desire to paint figures telling a story…What motivates me and excites me to paint is the drama of spectacular light and shadow on the figures,” she says. “[My goal is to] draw the viewer in from across the room to delve in closer to view the story that I wish to portray. My preferred subjects range from the cowboy to pioneer women and children, the Native Americans of the Plains and fly fishermen in vintage apparel. It was my memory of my father’s fishing creel that started me collecting fishing creels, especially the split-willow woven creels—what beautiful works of art they are. My husband and son are avid fishermen, and they make great models for those scenes.”

Sun Up to Sun Down, oil on linen, 18 x 30 in.

Standridge adds that she also loves painting the mountains, especially the Rocky Mountains, as well as clear rivers and streams. “I have been privileged to study under nationally recognized artists. One of my favorites was watercolor artist Edgar Whitney,” she adds. “To this day I still remember his quote, ‘This canvas is your stage, are you going to entertain the viewer or bore him?’ I’m always excited to start the next painting. We never stop learning.”

In Her Finest, oil on linen, 30 x 24 in.

The artist will next show her work at Cowgirl Up! Art From the Other Half of the West in March 2025 at the Desert Caballeros Western Museum in Wickenburg, Arizona. It will be her 15th year participating. —
