For years, California artist Kathy Harder has honored a dream of combining her artistry with the stewardship of her beloved mountain ranch. Surrounded by old oak forests, her creativity springs from a “return to source” and a connected journey alongside the animals she documents with such creative power.

Stuck Up and Sassy, watercolor, 29½ x 33½ in.
As someone whose life embodies her art, both literally and figuratively, her expression is deeply intertwined with her daily life. This integration serves as a narrative, as do the more than 20 years of art study. Her work has been shown nationally, including at the Phippen Museum and in the Young Guns show at the Coors Western Art Exhibition & Sale. Harder is looking forward to Cowgirl Up! Art from the Other Half of the West at Desert Caballeros Western Museum in 2025, and she was also one of 37 artists to premier in the Women Artists of the West show at the Woolaroc Museum in Oklahoma.

Dynamite Comes in Small Packages, watercolor, 19¾ x 34¼ in.
Her current medium of watercolor allows her to layer light and movement in her work and gives her the ability to capture the environment around her. Her brushwork technique encourages the natural evolution of the paintings, allowing them to develop and bring out the dimension of the subject. “My distinctive vision will continue to reflect my purpose, creating work that stimulates the mind, while speaking to the soul,” she says.

Freckles or Spots?, watercolor, 17 x 18 in.
Her next shows will be the Young Guns show in Denver from December 12 to January 7, 2025, and then Cowgirl Up! in Wickenburg, Arizona, starting March 28, 2025. —
