Frederic Remington (1861-1909), The Patient Pack-Mule, watercolor, ink and pen on paper, 11¼ x 17 in. Estimate: $15/25,000 SOLD: $81,900
“We are quite pleased with the auction and the numbers we saw. We were also impressed with the high number of registered bidders,” says auction partner Brad Richardson. “It was a great way to close out the year. Between this sale and our annual April sale, we realized more than $18 million in sales. So we are extremely pleased with the market. One of the exciting parts of this August sale was how competitive it was for our bidders. We saw bidding just as competitive as the April sale. And from some really great artists: Frederic Remington, Olaf Wieghorst, Logan Maxwell Hagege, John Nieto, Bill Owen and Martin Grelle.”

Frederic Remington (1861-1909), Hauling Wagon Out of Bog Hole, black and white oil on canvas, 12 x 18 in. Estimate: $30/50,000 SOLD: $76,050
Remington did especially well with four works, all of them in black-and-white mediums, in the top 10 lots. The top lot was a watercolor and ink piece titled The Patient Pack-Mule, showing two men tightening a load on a mule. The work sold for $81,000, more than triple its high estimate of $25,000. Not far behind it was Hauling Wagon Out of Bog Hole, with a high estimate of $50,000. The black-and-white oil work sold for $76,000.
Other artists who sold well were Gerard Curtis Delano, Franz Bischoff and modern figurative painter Nieto. —
