The annual Trappings of Texasshow and sale returns to the Museum of the Big Bend in Alpine, Texas, for another showcase of incredible Western artwork and authentic cowboy gear. The three-day event, running September 12 to 14, gives art collectors and lovers of all things Western the chance to meet directly with the artists and learn about their craft.

Opportunities to get in on the action are abundant, with a robust schedule of events right from the get go. Beginning Thursday, September 12, is the Preview Party at the Museum of the Big Bend from 5 to 8 p.m. Artist demonstrations on the museum’s patio start the following day from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m., which offers a great opportunity to chat with the artists as they create new works on the spot. That same evening is the opening reception and sale from 6 to 9 p.m., a festive party with food, drinks, live music and more.
More artists demonstrations and presentations will be happening the next day as well, from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m., in addition to the Trappings of Texas Ranch Roundup Party in Marfa, Texas, from 5 to 8 p.m.
One of the artists whose work will be showcased during the 2024 Trappings of Texas is Lindy C. Severns, a landscape painter inspired by nature’s small surprises. “I paint real places, most of them close to my home in the Davis Mountains, remote ranch country near Marfa. The landscape in my painting lies a few miles above the Rio Grande on a teeth-jarring ranch road that leads through private land all the way from the serenely rolling hills of the Marfa highlands downward to the river,” she says of her pastel A Thousand Colors in a Parched Land.

“I have a love of cacti and succulents—the way that they grow is amazing!” says Carol Arnold, who brings a botanical pastel titled Getting Close. “People tend to just see spikes, but if you look really close, you can see an amazingly intricate pattern of geometric design and subtle colors. One of my goals is that through my artwork, I can help people to see the amazing beauty that surrounds them in their everyday life.”
Other artists in this year’s Trappings of Texas include pen-and-ink artist Mike Capron, as well as the 2024 Premier Artist, Wayne Franklin, who will be featuring a solid sterling silver trophy-style buckle. —
