Preston Singletary (Tlingit), Raven Steals the Moon, glass and mixed media, 18 x 6 x 6 in. Estimate: $8/12,000

“It’s a very unique and special collection,” says Ariana Hartsock, director of fine art at Heritage Auctions. “We sold the first installment of Jack Harrod’s property in 2022 as a single-owner online sale, and it was wildly successful. I think we set about five or six new world auction records for these artists, and it had an incredible reception from the Southwestern collecting community, including dealers and collectors who knew Jack from Santa Fe art circles. Sadly, he passed away in 2022 in a tragic car accident, so I think many wanted to participate in preserving his memory.”

Helen Hardin (Tsa-saw-wee-eh) (1943-1984), Early Morning Brings the Abundant Gift of Life, 1978, acrylic on board, 38½ x 21 in. Estimate: $7/10,000

Harrod’s passion for collecting the art of Indigenous America began while he was stationed with the U.S. Army in Utah. While Harrod and his wife Mary Jo later moved to a suburb of Dallas, Texas, the couple made frequent trips to Santa Fe, New Mexico, where they began to acquire and fill their home with fine art, pottery and folk art. “The Harrods’ dedication to the support of local painters, artisans and craftspeople resulted in an astounding and comprehensive collection that demonstrates a true devotion to the arts and culture of the region,” notes Heritage Auctions.

Other artists to be on the lookout for during the Southwest Visions II sale include Lucy Lewis, Margarete Bagshaw, Dorothy Eugenie Brett, Fred Kabotie, Helen Blumenschein, Julian Martinez, Pablita Velarde, Howard Schleeter and more. —
