The epic landscape of the Grand Canyon National Park holds a timeless allure for many, including artists who seek to capture even a sliver of its majestic qualities. This is why the annual Grand Canyon Celebration of Arthas reached immense popularity among patrons and artists alike.

More than 23 artists gather along the South Rim of the canyon to paint in plein air from September 7 to 14, and infuse their own vision into inspiring Grand Canyon depictions. “[This] is an extraordinary event that celebrates the profound connection between human expression and the majesty of Grand Canyon National Park,” adds Mindy Riesenberg, chief communications officer for the Grand Canyon Conservancy.
Attendees will have the unique opportunity to watch artists at work, including during the “official” Artist Paint-Out on September 13, from 3 to 6 p.m., also at the South Rim. Completed works will be available for purchase on-site. The following day, from 6 to 10 a.m., is the Sunrise Painting event, where artists paint between Mather Point and Trail View Overlook.

Later in the evening on September 14, from 5:30 to 7 p.m., is the ticketed Collectors’ Reception at Kolb Studio, where attendees will find stunning examples like Dawn Sutherland’s “flagship” piece, Rhythm of the River, based on a photo taken from the artist’s Colorado River trip through the canyon. “[This] a beautiful time of late afternoon when the crew seeks a good campground for the night. The sun is lowering, shadows are starting to reveal the shapes and contours of those ancient walls, and most intriguing to me, is the reflected light bouncing off of lit areas into the shadows...”
The exhibition will remain on view at the Grand Canyon from September 15 through January 20, 2025. —
