Dynamic Visual Experience

Landscape and figurative painter James Ayers, had several goals in mind during his preparation for his new solo show, Intersect, at Canyon Road Contemporary Art. While representational in style, Ayers set-out to incorporate abstracted elements to his pieces that are inspired by themes of interconnectedness, while also tapping into an expressionistic style that “provides a way for a viewer to experience a moment instead of simply observing.”

Flow State, oil on canvas, 48 x 60 in.

The artist adds, “The title Intersect, reflects the intersection of natural landscapes and human activity. “I use spray paint and crayon—mediums typically associated with urban life, alongside traditional oil paint—to create a dialogue between the past and the present, the natural and the man-made. This approach speaks to the many layers of my life, merging my love for nature with my connection to hip-hop culture. I aim to show how different parts of our lives are interconnected, creating a layered and dynamic visual experience.”

Ayers hope is that collectors see the layers and depth in each work, and to get lost in the textures and colors. “I [want] to create art that is both visually stunning and deeply satisfying to live with.”

Vibrant Vista, oil on canvas, 36 x 48 in.

For the show opening September 6, collectors will find around 10 paintings that appear to sway or buzz with movement, like Vibrant Vista, inspired by the artist’s recent family trip to Cathedral Rock in Sedona, Arizona. “This painting captures the vibrant colors of the red rocks,” says the artist. “The bold oranges and deep reds contrast with the expansive landscape, while the blue streaks in the sky add depth. My signature dashes of spray paint blur the line between abstraction and representation, infusing the painting with dynamic energy.”

Flow State is another highlight. “This artwork is inspired by the badlands of the Dakotas, where rivers carve through vast prairies,” he shares. “The painterly [sections] and textural effects bring the composition to life.”

Intersect will hang at Canyon Road Contemporary Art through September 15, with an artist reception on opening day, September 6, from 5 to 7 p.m. —
