John Clymer doubles estimate in Dallas
Proving yet again that John Clymer’s market is healthy and strong, Heritage Auction sold a major piece from the artist’s illustration career for double the high estimate. Rustic Daydreams (Abandoned Equipment), South of Jackson, Wyoming, originated as a Saturday Evening Post cover from May 23, 1959. The work was sold at Heritage’s Dallas showroom on May 15 during an American art sale. Estimated at $70,000 to $100,000, the piece sold for $200,0000. It was the fourth-best lot in the sale, behind works by Agnes Pelton, Rembrandt Peale and J.C. Leyendecker.

Marjorie Reed performs well at John Moran auction
Eight Marjorie Reed paintings were available to bidders during John Moran Auctioneer’s June 4 Art of the American West sale in Monrovia, California. All of the eight sold, including six that surpassed their high estimates. The top Reed was 1975’s The Stage is Here!, showing a lively stagecoach scene with its central subject roaring into a Western town. The work was estimated at $2,000 to $3,000, but sold for $6,500. Reed was known for her loosely painted Western scenes, many involving stagecoaches. Bidders showed considerable interest in these works, seven of which were wagon or stagecoach scenes. —
