Spanish Flavors

Santa Fe Art Auction celebrates the world-famous Spanish Market with a live sale.

New Mexico has several events that are known nationally and even internationally: Santa Fe Indian Market in August, the Albuquerque International Balloon Festival in October and Spanish Market in Santa Fe in July. To celebrate this year’s Spanish Market, Santa Fe Art Auction is presenting New Mexico Now,a live sale that will add to the festive atmosphere around town.

“Coinciding with Santa Fe’s famous Spanish Market, Santa Fe Art Auction’s New Mexico Now sale once again presents a unique combination of historic and contemporary Spanish Colonial and folk arts of New Mexico and beyond,” says auction president and CEO Gillian Blitch. “The sale will be held this year from July 24 to 25 and will feature approximately 300 lots representing the rich stylistic dialogue and religious history of the Southwest. Offerings include retablos, bultos, santeros, crosses, furniture and tin work, alongside paintings, sculpture, Native American jewelry and many other examples of fine contemporary and traditional devotional works.”

Two noteworthy lots that may interest Western fans is Willard Clark’s 1933 oil, Untitled (Prayer), estimated at $2,000 to $4,000. The sale will also feature fine Native American jewelry, including a concho belt made with Sleeping Beauty turquoise from Navajo jeweler and silversmith Andy Cadman. —
