Artist Focus

Artist Focus: Laura Wambsgans

Painter Laura Wambsgans began her art journey 18 years ago following a career as the managing director of a major recording studio, and later as a sculptor. She’s never looked back.

Spooner Lake, oil, 18 x 24 in.

“My inspiration springs from scenes that take my breath away...Whether nestled in a pine forest overlooking Lake Eliza high in the Sierras or perched along the rugged shores of Big Sur, nature consistently captivates me, particularly the interplay of sunlight across the landscape. When painting on location, I meticulously gather details to enrich my studio work,” Wambsgans says. “My approach to oil painting leans towards traditional, with a primary focus on capturing the essence of the scenes that initially caught my eye. The tactile richness of oil paint holds a special allure for me, and I find joy in simply mixing piles of paint. Exploration and learning remain integral to my artistic journey—a passion instilled in me from a young age by my mother, who herself was a painter and sculptor.”

The artist will be participating in the Tehachapi Art Commission’s Art 2024 Tehachapi on July 20 and 21 in California. She participated in the 2023 show and is grateful to the organizers all they do for artists and collectors.

Whispering Cottonwoods, oil, 30 x 24 in.

While attending the 2024 show, Wambsgans will have an opportunity to find new painting subjects. “Traveling across the country, I am frequently moved by the beauty of the scenery I encounter. From the timeless vistas of Yosemite to the haunting allure of Canyon de Chelly, the Western landscape offers an endless array of subjects begging to be immortalized on canvas,” she says. “With each painting, my aim is to craft a tranquil vista, serving as a metaphorical window to these exquisite locales. My art carries a message of peace and serenity, a celebration of the sublime beauty of nature.” —
