The Phippen Museum celebrates two milestones with May shows in Prescott, Arizona.

May is usually a sustained celebration in Prescott, Arizona, where the Phippen Museum hosts two annual shows, the Western Art Show & Sale and the Miniature Masterpiece Show & Sale. This year, though, the shows are both marking important milestones with the Western Art Show celebrating 50 years and Miniature Masterpiecehitting 20 years.

Tom Perkinson, Great White Egrets at Sunset, pastel, 9 x 10 in.

“It’s a unique time for us here at the Phippen,” says executive director Edd Kellerman. “We have the miniature show opening right at the start of the month and then the big show on the [Yavapai County] Courthouse Plaza during Memorial Day weekend. It’s always a fun time to come enjoy our beautiful town and weather.”

Phil Beck, Keepin’ That Tail Dry, oil, 9 x 12 in.

Miniature Masterpiece opens May 1 and continues through June 2. It will take place at the Phippen Museum, which is a short drive from the center of central Prescott. A special reception for the exhibition is scheduled on Friday, May 3, at 5:30 p.m. The ticketed event will feature food and drinks, a chance to meet the artists and opportunities to make intent-to-purchase bids. The drawing for the sale will take place May 27 at 11 a.m.

Sonja Caywood, Fly Time, oil, 11 x 14 in.

This year’s artists contributing a small work to the exhibition include Edward Aldrich, Steve Atkinson, Sherry Blanchard Stuart, Gary Byrd, Shawn Cameron, Sonja Caywood, Karen Clarkson, Lisa Danielle, Steve Devenyns, Mikel Donahue, Joni Falk, Linda Glover Gooch, Robert Goldman, Harper Henry, Doyle Hostetler, Greg Kelsey, Susan Kliewer, Alvin Marshall, Curt Mattson, Dan Mieduch, Rock Newcomb, Tom Perkinson, Sarah Phippen, Ian Ramsay, Marlin Rotach, Wei Tai, Michele Usibelli, Don Weller and many others.

Stephanie Campos, Nellie Brown, charcoal, 13 x 10½ in.

Visitors to Prescott have the option of timing their travel for later in May so they can attend both shows. “They really go hand in hand. For Miniature Masterpiece, the show opens early in May, but the draw is not until the final day of the show, which is Memorial Day. It allows people to do both shows during the weekend. It’s a lot of fun.” —
