Santa Fe Art Auction’s Art of the West sale explores the rich heritage of Western and Native American art.

The Art of the Westat Santa Fe Art Auction this May is shaping up to be another superb sale with an exceptional selection of Western and Native American artwork on offer. The collection features paintings, sculptures and more from such artists as Ben Turner, Ken Carlson, David Nordahl, E.A. Burbank, Carlos Vierra, Dan Namingha, Agnes Tait, Lon Megargee and Fran Larsen.

“Santa Fe Art Auction’s Art of the West sale…marks the beginning of high season for the Southwest house,” says Gillian Blitch, president and CEO of the Santa Fe-based auction house. She adds that the sale also comes in anticipation of the 75th annual Rodeo de Santa Fe, a city staple held June 19 to 22. “[Western works in the sale] celebrate the region’s rich heritage and express all that makes the West wild, rugged and markedly collectable,” she says. Native American lots in the upcoming sale include fine pieces of vintage jewelry, pottery and classic Navajo Rugs.

Among some of the major highlights in the two-day sale come from an important collection of wildlife art from Virginia Museum of Animal Art, which features extraordinary examples of contemporary sculpture from renowned African sculptor Mopho Gonde as well as Fritz Scholder, Star Liana York and RC Gorman. The proceeds from approximately 100 works from the Gene Worrell Collection of Animal Art will go toward funding for an expansion project at the William King Museum of Art in Abingdon, Virginia, where the collection will soon be housed in a new dedicated wing.

Laurence Philip Sisson (1928-2015), On the Road to Ojo Caliente, oil on canvas, 30 x 40 in.  Estimate: $2/4,000

Additional highlights include Namingha’s oil Pueblo Triptych, a three-paneled townscape estimated at $3,000 to $5,000; Roseta Santiago’s Journey Home (est. $2/4,000), depicting a Native American horseback rider facing away from the viewer; Stephen Rosser’s acrylic The Vanishing American Cowboy, expected to fetch $4,000 to $8,000; and Laurence Philip Sisson’s oil On the Road to Ojo Caliente (est. $2/4,000). Sculptures to be on the lookout for include Scholder’s 1991 bronze Another Dream Horse, estimated at $4,000 to $6,000, as well as William Zorach’s stone-carved Reclining Nude, expected to bring in $2,500 to $5,000.
