Brush With Nature

Brad Price shows new Southwest images at Meyer Gallery in Santa Fe.

John Manzari, owner of Meyer Gallery in Santa Fe, New Mexico, describes the work of Brad Price succinctly: “His contemporary post-impressionist paintings, marked by bold brushstrokes and vibrant colors, convey the rugged beauty of the region. Through emotive works, Price not only depicts scenes but allows viewers to share in the immersive experience of the landscapes he portrays on canvas.”

A Brush With Natureis the title of Price’s next exhibition at the gallery. It opens May 31 and runs through June 13.

Winter Chamisa Morning, oil on canvas, 30 x 40 in.

Price visits Northern New Mexico from his home in Oklahoma to immerse himself in the colors, light and forms of the region. His brushstrokes, color complements and contrasts bring a unique vibrancy to his paintings.

Price employs a technique called “simultaneous color contrast” used by the impressionists and in the color experiments of Josef Albers. It refers to the way different colors affect each other. When two colors are put side by side, their colors don’t change but our perception of them does. It is most pronounced when the colors are intense and complementary. Rather than blending the colors on his canvas, Price leaves the blending to occur through the viewers’  vision.

Chimney Rock, oil on canvas, 40 x 30 in.

Cottonwood Rainbow, oil on canvas, 30 x 40 in.

His brush strokes and use of color recall Van Gogh and the late Robert Daughters (1929-2013) whose paintings can also be seen at the gallery. Price’s style, however, is his own, and his energetic painting and bold color generate a feeling similar to his own when viewers look at his paintings.

Taos Pueblo, oil on canvas, 11 x 14 in.

In Winter Chamisa Morning, brushstrokes lead the eye through the high contrasts of light and shadow and through soft snow and spikey stems. In Taos Pueblo, the palette changes to the cool colors of distant mountains and adobe shadows contrasting with the subtle warmth of the adobe walls. —
