Bone Creek Museum: Gary Ernest Smith

In late 2023, the Bone Creek Museum of Agrarian Art in David City, Nebraska, received a major gift of 24 paintings by Gary Ernest Smith from the Overland Gallery of Minneapolis. A number of the paintings are now on display in the exhibition Gary Ernest Smith: Elemental Landscapes.

Woman in a Garden, oil on canvas, 60 x 96”. Gift of Overland Gallery to Bone Creek Museum of Agrarian Art.

The donation was made possible because of an expansion project and a $6.2 million funding campaign that will add new exhibition space at the museum. Bone Creek is renovating and renewing its Nebraska space into a state-of-the-art national venue. This renovation allows the museum to expand space for youth education, create more functional areas for displaying and preserving agrarian art, supply accessible community gathering and classroom spaces, and broaden art education for patrons of all ages. The new museum is expected to open in the spring of 2025 with these works on view.

Wheat Harvester, 1990, oil on canvas, 48 x 48”. Gift of Overland Gallery to Bone Creek Museum of Agrarian Art.

“I am extremely flattered and honored to have my work find a permanent home at the Bone Creek Museum,” says Smith. “It is a prestigious and unique museum that celebrates, honors and reveres the life, culture and contributions of rural America.”
