InSight Gallery presents new piece from Ann Craft Walker
Still life painter Ann Craft Walker has brought a new work to InSight Gallery in Fredericksburg, Texas. The work, titled Hope in Seasons of Drought, is a personal work from the artist who says she was inspired by a recent death in the family. To take her mind off her grief, she started working on her property.
“We live on a sweet little 20-acre spot in the Texas Hill Country on the Little Blanco River. Much of our land had been ranched since the 1920s and suffered from overgrazing. We dove in full force to work on restoring the land, planting native grasses and about 300 native trees. So this long, desperate summer I was alone most of the time fighting to keep things alive, hauling water, etc. I put on my pistol every morning to tromp around the place and see what needed attention the most,” she says, adding that the pistol was for any rattlesnakes. “One morning in early September on my morning tromp by the totally dry riverbed, I noticed this gracefully-shaped sycamore limb. The leaves were brown from drought. And in spite of what the drought and heat had stolen from nature, it was still beautiful. I also found a bird nest. Those two things lifted my heart. I felt hopeful. There was still beauty to be found in the midst of one of the most devastating droughts on record in our area. And so, Hope in Seasons of Drought came from that.
