What event (gallery show, museum exhibit, etc.) in the next few months are you looking forward to, and why?
Of course, I have to say my project I’m organizing. I’m excited to present Sarah Zapata’s solo exhibition opening at the ASU Art Museum on February 10. This exhibition features entirely new works referencing the Arizonan landscape, all completed during her residency at CALA Alliance in the fall of 2023. This exhibition is the artist’s most ambitious presentation of her work to date.

What are you reading?
Unfortunately, I don’t usually have much time for pleasure reading. Most of my reading is informed by projects I’m working on. I’ve recently picked up Somewhere We Are Human: Authentic Voices on Migration, Survival, and New Beginnings edited by Reyna Grande and Sonia Guiñansaca. It’s a multivocal anthology of writing and artwork that offers considerations to migration.

Interesting exhibit, gallery opening or work of art you’ve seen recently.
One of the best shows I have seen this year and keep thinking about was Tuan Andrew Nguyen: Radiant Remembrance, organized by Vivian Crockett at the New Museum in New York. A smart and really timely project.

What are you researching at the moment?
I’m excitedly working on several projects where I get to jump in and out of deep research periods. One of the exhibitions I am conducting deep research on is for a two-person presentation of the artists and architects Bennie Gonzales and Dennis Numkena, slated to open at the ASU Art Museum in March 2025. Stay tuned!

What is your dream exhibit to curate? Or see someone else curate?
As curators, we constantly think through ideas from group shows to retrospectives. Without giving too much away about future projects that are starting to come together, it’s my dream to have a deep look at the practice of many trailblazing Chicana artists who laid critical groundwork for artists working today. —
